Our Simple Guide to Disposable Gloves

Our simple guide to disposable gloves covers polythene, vinyl and nitrile options, all of which are single-use and disposable.

Selecting the correct PPE for use can be problematic with so many options to choose from. Here we focus on disposable gloves, looking at alternatives to traditional latex gloves to minimise the risk of allergies in healthcare staff.

When assessing glove use always consider:

  • The task to be carried out

  • Contact with hazardous liquids

  • Allergies or sensitivities

  • Appropriate glove size

  • Safe glove disposal

  • Hand hygiene

Note that gloves are not a suitable substitute for hand hygiene. Gloves must be changed between procedures, disposed of and appropriate hand washing/sanitising must be followed to reduce the risk of infection before a fresh pair is applied. Always check gloves for signs of damage before use and dispose of them if they are not fit for purpose.

PPE must be chosen by assessing the task ahead

NO-RISK TASKS

Polythene Gloves

Disposable polythene is a value choice for general-purpose gloves that do not require protection against hazardous substances. These can be used for simple food-handling, preparation and serving tasks and are not suitable for clinical use. Polythene gloves offer an inexpensive disposable option to simply help reduce the risk of cross-contamination.

LOW-RISK TASKS

Vinyl Gloves

Vinyl gloves are a PVC-based synthetic, offering protection during a wide range of everyday low-risk tasks. Vinyl is generally a less expensive option to nitrile as it is typically less durable and has a looser fit. Although vinyl gloves are commonly used in housekeeping and by carers, a risk assessment should be carried out to determine whether vinyl or nitrile would be best suited for a particular task. A sterile vinyl option is also available offering higher protection against cross-contamination.

HIGH-RISK TASKS

Nitrile Gloves

Nitrile gloves are ideal for use in all aspects of nursing where there is contact with bodily fluids. Due to its heavy-weight properties, nitrile is also suitable for use during housekeeping tasks when handling potentially hazardous chemicals. Made from synthetic rubber, nitrile is a premium option offering a great alternative to natural latex gloves to provide a close fit. Its exceptional puncture-resistant properties provide high levels of protection but with less tactile sensitivity than a natural latex alternative.

Basic Gloves: Polythene

Polythene gloves provide effective basic protection and are perfect for general-purpose use. These lightweight, powder-free gloves provide a good amount of tactile sensitivity. An ambidextrous fit and a standard length ensure maximum manoeuvrability and coverage.

Everyday Task Gloves: Vinyl

Vinyl Powder Free Gloves are a cost-effective choice for those with allergies or sensitivities to latex. These non-sterile vinyl gloves offer great protection and durability, made from a hypoallergenic material that is designed to be gentle on the skin.

Medical Grade Gloves: Nitrile

Nitrile gloves are a great way to maintain a high level of hygiene and offer superior protection. Medical-grade gloves that are compliant to EN374 provide resistance against bacterial, fungal and viral penetration. This makes them ideal for use in care home settings where bodily fluids can be prevalent. Nitrile gloves are a great choice for housekeeping tasks, preventing hand irritation that might be caused by chemical contact and in turn reducing the risk of skin irritation. Nitrile offers superior puncture resistance compared to latex and vinyl alternatives.
